Sister Cities and Friendship Cities

Sister Cities and Friendship Cities

Spain/Alicante City
Toyooka City and Toyooka International Association sent a party of 33 in 1996 to Alicante City to ally itself with Alicante, and then the sister city agreement was signed between Toyooka City and Alicante City on the 25th   of June at the assembly hall in Alicante. In 2000, we received the Mayor of Alicante City and a party of 18 including 6 students to Toyooka when we celebrated our 50th anniversary, and we sent a party of 10 to Alicante again in 2002. We sometimes exchange some household goods each other and we held an exhibition of the products of Spain. We accepted the students who wanted to learn Japanese from Alicante City.
We have been continuing these exchanges since 1996.
We also have another exchange with Ruhstadt in Germany through Kounotori (the Oriental White Stork).

New Zealand/Ruapehu District Coucil
We started the exchange with Ruapehu DC in New Zealand in 1992 through the New Zealand Embassy. In 1993, 30 of citizens visited New Zealand for the first time and we welcomed the Mayor of Ruapehu and Taumarunui students here in 1994. We held the “Tajima New Zealand Festival” at that time. Since then, during 1995 to 1999, we had been exchanging students every year.
In July 2000, the Mayor of Ruapehu DC visited Hidaka and then, sister city agreement was signed between Hidaka and Ruapehu DC. After the agreement, the Mayor of Hidaka and a chairman paid a courtesy visit to Ruapehu DC in 2001. A party of 25 from the Hidaka-Japan cultural exchange visited Ruapehu DC in September and exchanged cultures.
After that, we welcomed Tumarunui students in January 2002,2006 and 2007, and we sent a party in August 2006.

Korea/Gyeongju City
We reached an agreement and exchanged the friendship city declaration at Gyeomgju City council in Korea in the 7th of November 1991. As of today, we sent a party four times from the International Association and have exchanged our cultures. Sending about 25 elementary school students during the summer vacation, we give them a chance to experience a different culture. The students stay with Korean families to learn more about them.
We have also accepted students from Korea as well.

Mongolia/Bogd, Bayanhongor

We sent the first friendship mission to Mongolia in 1993, and the next year the Friendship Alliance was tied between Bogd and Tanto area in Toyooka. Since then, we have been sending a friendship mission to Mongolia every two years and we have had trainees that were mainly composed of junior high school students. It’s already been 10 years since we started this exchange programs among people in Tanto area and people in Mongolia. Also, the “Mongolia Japan Silk Road Friendship Association” (registries in Mongolia) was established when the party from Mongolia visited Tanto area in 2000, and our friendship deepen after that.

Sister School
【Seattle, Washington USA/Whitman Middle School 】

We have been exchanging the sister school relationship with each other since 1997. We exchange junior high school students every year. We have students from Seattle in the spring, and we visit them in the autumn. During their stay, they stay with Japanese/American families, and improve their Japanese/English skill by using it everyday.
